This development comprised the demolition of a run down community facility with construction of an extension to an existing Extra Care Housing Scheme run by City of York Council providing xx no. new apartments,4 no. 2 bedroom bungalows, are placement community sports facility and the refurbishment and extension of the existing cafeteria and lounge areas.
SPA formed a design team and were appointed through competition to design and develop this facility, based upon our extensive experience in the sector. Having viewed previous developments carried out for the Council, we were tasked with designing to maximise the site potential, providing a minimum of 30 new apartments, ensuring the new accommodation not only met exacting standards but was accessible from the existing accommodation. The new accommodation was designed to incorporate light, airy communal spaces in contrast to the brick corridors exhibited in the existing building .The original dark and claustrophobic lounge and café have been opened up into much lighter spaces and now much better utilized by residents.
SPA Architects also undertook the interior design work, providing separate themes and colour schemes for each floor and using local imagery to assist residents in navigating around the scheme
