Following a design competition SPA were selected to develop a centre of excellence consisting of new build, refurbishment & remodelling solutions for an existing hospital site in Middlesbrough.
By master planning the site, SPA identified the optimum locations for a new arrangement of buildings which linked together a new 12-bed low secure residential facility, 14-bed eating disorder’s unit and a 12-bed assessment & treatment unit.
The development provides new and improved facilities to enable the three in-patient wards to offer more appropriate modern facilities for children with mental health problems in a less institutional environment. The Westwood Centre, the first phase to be completed is a multi purpose built low secure unit providing high quality accommodation for young people aged 12-18 years. The building provides twelve en-suite bedrooms, a range of therapy & treatment rooms, gym, education room, music room, games room, landscaped court yard gardens and communal lounges. The building has been carefully designed along with the client and end users to incorporate comprehensive anti ligature detailing together with the use of robust, low maintenance finishes, whilst also maintaining a bright, comfortable and modern internal environment appropriate to the young age group.
